The Respiratory Therapist RRT provides advanced-level respiratory
care to patients. This position is designed to diagnose, evaluate,
treat, manage, and control deficiencies and/or abnormalities of the
cardiopulmonary system within the prescription of the order
physician. The therapist acts as a resource to the staff. The RRT
may be responsible for special clinical projects or assignments as
designated by leadership according to the needs of the department.
Responsibilities include performing, interpreting, and evaluating
diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol. Obtaining
arterial gases is also a requirement. The RRT oversees and
troubleshoots the operation of equipment for optimal patient care.
Initiating Respiratory Protocol according to department criteria is
essential. The therapist initiates interventions based on the
interpretation of assessments. Administering medications in a
timely and safe manner is necessary. Evaluating effect and
re-evaluating appropriately according to protocol is expected. The
RRT ensures that progress of the patient is communicated to staff,
physicians, and other departments. Maintaining awareness of
assigned patient’s overall condition is crucial. The therapist
communicates and shares patient information with the physicians and
nurses. Making appropriate recommendations for patient care is
required. Recognizing the educational needs of patients and
families in relation to health promotion and wellness is important.
Teaching patients and families self-care techniques and modalities
is part of the role. Completing documentation according to
departmental standards is necessary. The RRT accurately documents
productivity information. Monitoring supplies and equipment and
notifying the appropriate person when supplies are low, out on
loan, or broken is a responsibility. Utilizing time effectively to
achieve productivity standards, including using low census time
when patient load does not support full productivity, is essential.
Participating in quality and patient safety initiatives is
expected. Identifying potential areas for improvement, including
processes that could be streamlined or revised to improve patient
satisfaction, is necessary. Identifying potential safety hazards
that may create problems for patients and/or staff and taking
appropriate actions is part of the role. Participating in
departmental meetings and contributing ideas or feedback is
required. Promoting the profession of Respiratory Care and acting
as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff is expected.
Participating in quality improvement and research activities as
part of the Respiratory Care Team to guide the development of
standards of patient care is essential. The RRT may be required to
float to other departments based on business needs. The therapist
may be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled
shift. Performing other duties as assigned is part of the role.
