This position is with the Mental Health Service, located in Grand Junction, CO. The incumbent performs assignments in support of the professional clinical staff in completion of their routine duties, upholds the standards of care outlined in the Medical Center, and Mental Health Service policies and procedures. That includes performing a variety of clinical, technical, and administrative duties for Mental Health Service that provides treatment in outpatient, inpatient and residential settings.

The incumbent assists professional clinical staff by supporting mental health services. The incumbent interacts with health care professionals and Veterans to support clinical tasks such a measurement based care, management and assignment of mental health consults, tracking of Veterans from entry into treatment through recovery, scoring psychological and neurospcyhological assessments, etc. The incumbent also administratively supports the Mental Health Service education programs (e.g, Psychology Internship) and Center for Post-traumatic Growth. The incumbent must have strong interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with Mental Health Service team members and Veterans assist the entry of the Veteran into mental health services and organizational skills to complete administrative and data-driven tasks in the Mental Health Service. These dual job functions are needed for the effective delivery of care Veterans and monitoring of performance indicators in the Mental Health Service.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collect, enter and manage measurement based care data to support analysis of outcomes in various mental health treatment programs.
  • Provide excellent customer service skills in context of mental health clinic
  • Serve as administrative support to mental health education programs and specialty care programs (e.g., PTSD Clinical Team)
  • Use and monitor consult tracking tool to ensure consults are processed and assigned in a timely manner
  • Collect, maintain and summarize patient and employee satisfaction data for reporting to service leadership
  • Assist the behavioral health professional staff in determining the appropriate course of treatment or disposition which may include: referral to emergency triage service, referral to mental health evaluation team, initiation of duty to warn or welfare check, referral to another facility for psychiatric or substance problems, assist with a referral to medical or surgical service, treatment as an outpatient at Behavioral Health or referral to other medical specialties for evaluation and/or treatment
  • Gather necessary documents to include synopsis of reason for patient presenting at Mental Health, results of examinations, impressions, and tentative diagnosis for those patients referred to other services
  • Document information in the computerized patient record system (CPRS)
  • Perform various administrative functions concerning mental health performance measures and monitors, including SAIL data, mental health management system data, productivity data and access data
  • Monitor note and encounter completion reports, provides feedback to providers and assist in fixing errors
  • Assist mental health leadership with process improvement projects

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time in grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. GS-07 grade level: This position requires either one year of specialized experience or Applicants may also substitute education for experience for the GS-7 Level. Specialized experience would be (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to: clinical skills in case management; administrative/clerical skills; knowledge of mental health consultation services; ability to communicate with health care professionals to establish effective case consultation and program/organizational services; ability to work independently to problem solve patient complaints and frontline tribulations; ability to understand the difficulties patients have in following through with mental health treatment; apply empathic interviewing skills; clear communication with patients to promote a positive therapeutic experience for the patient; the ability to use motivational interviewing techniques to improve the acceptance of mental health evaluation and treatment.

Applicants may also substitute education for the experience required for the GS-7 level: One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Education must be in a program directly related to the work of the position. A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
