Therapist Certifications: Registered by the National Board for
Respiratory Care (RRT), Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced
Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Must-Have: Respiratory Therapy,
Patient Education, Patient Care, Critical Thinking, Documentation,
Quality Improvement Description: The Respiratory Therapist provides
advanced-level respiratory care to patients. This care is designed
to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control deficiencies
and/or abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. The position
acts as a resource to the staff and may be responsible for special
clinical projects or assignments as designated by leadership
according to the needs of the department. Responsibilities include
performing, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic testing
procedures according to protocol. Obtaining arterial gases is part
of the role. Overseeing and troubleshooting the operation of
equipment for optimal patient care is essential. Initiating
Respiratory Protocol according to department criteria and
initiating interventions based on the interpretation of assessments
is expected. Administering medications in a timely and safe manner
is crucial. Evaluating effects and re-evaluating appropriately
according to protocol is required. Ensuring that the progress of
patients is communicated to staff, physicians, and other
departments is vital. Maintaining awareness of assigned patients'
overall conditions and communicating patient information with
physicians and nurses is necessary. Making appropriate
recommendations for patient care based on assessments is part of
the role. Recognizing the educational needs of patients and
families in relation to health promotion and wellness is important.
Teaching patients and families self-care techniques and modalities
is also a responsibility. Completing documentation according to
departmental standards and accurately documenting productivity
information is required. Monitoring supplies and equipment and
notifying appropriate personnel when supplies are low or broken is
necessary. Utilizing time effectively to achieve productivity
standards, including utilizing low census time, is part of the
expectations. Participating in quality and patient safety
initiatives is essential. Identifying potential areas for
improvement, including processes that could be streamlined or
revised to improve patient satisfaction, is encouraged. Identifying
potential safety hazards that may create problems for patients
and/or staff and taking appropriate actions is part of the role.
Participating in departmental meetings by contributing ideas or
feedback is important. Promoting the profession of Respiratory Care
and acting as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff is
expected. Participating in quality improvement and research
activities to guide the development of standards of patient care is
essential. Floating to other departments based on business needs
may be required. Being placed on-call during a regularly scheduled
shift may also be necessary. Performing other duties as assigned is
